What’s Green About the Burning Man Festival?
The Burning Man Festival, held every year in the northern Nevada desert is known as the largest ‘leave no trace’ event in the world. Within a day or two after it finishes, it’s hard to imagine that the area had been a temporary city for the over 50,000 attendees.
The festival’s disappearance without a trace is part of the environmental crede it’s festival organizers adopted in 2006. It involves the concept of MOOP ‘Matter Out Of Place’ which means that all trash is never to hit the ground, a brave idea given that there is not even a single garbage can onsite.
To find out how MOOP and other environmental concepts adopted by Burning Festival participants make this festival green, head over to Intelligent Travel and read Suzanne Robert’s article about ‘The Greening of Burning Man’.

I went to this year’s Burning Man– It was such an amazing experience and I was also very much blown away by the amount of “greenies” who were there and cared so much about the environment. Many people carried around MOOP bags in case they found trash on the playa (what we called the main desert area). I wrote about my burning man experience here if you want to follow up and learn more about it: http://greenfixes.blogspot.com/2008/09/burning-man-experience.html.
