The greening of Vancouver Island

Wild, lush Vancouver Island, BC, is one of Canada’s most beautiful destinations.

Recently, I asked the brilliant minds at Tourism Vancouver Island for green travel inspiration there.   Christina Maynard, Media Relations Coordinator, suggested many green travel sources.  Here are a few:

ECO-ATTRACTIONS/ACTIVITIES:

Harbour Air - “The world’s largest, all-seaplane airline, Harbour Air Ltd., has pledged to become carbon neutral as of 2008.”

Seacoast Expeditions - “Zodiacs are powered by environmentally friendly Yamaha 4-stroke outboards with low emissions and quiet operating levels.”

Tofino Botanical Gardens - “The mission of Tofino Botanical Gardens is to inspire conservation of the world’s Temperate Coastal Rainforests. They offer sustainability workshops for school groups, and educational classes for adults.”

GOLF COURSES

Blackburn Meadows Golf Club - “The first fully organic golf course in Canada, Blackburn Meadows was designed by well-known golf course designer Jeff Shaw.”

Bear Mountain, Olympic View and Crown Isle - “(They) have all joined the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program to develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs.”

RESORTS

Sooke Harbour House - “From Sooke Harbour House’s state-of-the-art water reclamation and recycling system, to its breathable grass parking lot, its hotel maintenance policies and on-site organic gardens, to support of locally produced organic products, Sooke Harbour House continually demonstrates that strong business and sustainable environmental practices definitely go hand in hand.”

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort - “(The resort) has an Acclaimed Environmental Legacy Program. A $3 million, resort-wide, five-year commitment to research, conservation and enhancement which invites guest participation at any level, and is funded solely by resort revenues.”

Thank you for highlighting the beauty of Vancouver Island. Nootka Sound on the West Coast is so pristine with excellent fishing and ecotours.
