Green Eating: Boston Restaurants.
According to a new article in The Wall Street Journal there are over 20 restaurants and cafes in Boston that can call themselves ‘green’. They have all met the Green Restaurant Association’s (GRA) green certification standards by providing recycling, eliminating Styrofoam products and implementing at least four carbon-footprint-reducing initiatives. Apparently Boston has the second highest number of GRA certified establishments in the country. New York City has the most.

Taranta

Owner and chef Jose Duarte, who cooks up Italian-Peruvian cuisine, won the 2008 City of Boston Green Business Award for his dedication to environmental sustainablity. Some of his initiatives include having a sustainable, organic and biodynamic wine list, using energy-efficient appliances and composting of food scraps. Café Fleuri

Located at The Langham hotel in the heart of the business district, this is the place for power breakfasts. You might even rub shoulders with the mayor or governor. It’s green intiatives includes using an ionized water system to reduce hot water usage by 50%, a reduction of linen usage, the elmination of styrofoam packaging, and the use of ingredients and top produce obtained from local artisanal markets and farmers.
Lumiere
1293 Washington Street, Newton
Lumiere has, under the watchful eyes of chef Michael Leviton, been composting food scraps, using chlorine-free paper products and buying from local farmers and fishermen since 2006.
