Europe’s Green Capital
The European Green Capital competition is in its final stages.
An evaluation panel, set up by the European Commission is making final assessments and recommendations about the 8 shortlisted cities. The first European Green Capital Award Ceremony will take place in Brussels, February 23/09.
Thirty-five applicant cities provided information on ten indicators regarding their present environmental status and results, what they were doing to improve the urban living conditions, their future initiatives and dissemination plans.
“It has been a really tough job to choose between the 35 applicant cities, with so many impressive ideas and results already achieved,” says Maria Berrini, director of the consultancy Ambiente Italia and member of the evaluation panel.
“The applications contained a wealth of strong suggestions for improved urban environments and future projects. But the work of the eight nominees were of such an outstanding nature, that we felt they all could be excellent role models for green capitals all over Europe.”
The 8 shortlisted cities are:
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Bristol, United Kingdom
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Freiburg, Germany
- Hamburg, Germany
- Munster, Germany
- Oslo, Norway
- Stockholm, Sweden

I had no idea about this competition. Sad but not surprised that there is no French city in the top 8.

That is great to see that Europe is doing a competition like this. They should also do the cities that are at the bottom of this list as well.
