Business Travelers Go Green.
A new Deloitte survey finds that business travelers want to travel green. Here’s the facts…
- Nearly seven out of ten business travelers (69%) say they always turn off the lights and one out of three (31%) always adjuts the heat/air conditioner when leaving the room.
- Roughly a third of travelers surveyed are keenly concerned about green travel. Some 34% “seek out hotels that are environmentally friendly,” just as 38% have researched green lodging facilities either online or by asking friends and relatives. Similarly, 28% say they would be willing to pay 10% more to stay in a green lodging facility.
Interestingly, many of these business travelers feel that hotels aren’t all that green, even when they advertise themselves as such. For example…
One in five (20%) say that they have stayed at a hotel that didn’t allow them to be as green as they wanted to be, while approximately 30% say they requested that sheets and/or towels not be changed but the hotel changed them anyway.
As for what business travelers are looking for in green accommodations, here are their top five concerns…
- Recycling (77%)
- Using energy-efficient lighting (74%)
- Using energy-efficient windows (59%)
- Placing cards in rooms to let guests request that sheet/towels not be changed (52%)
- Using environmentally safe cleaning products (49%)
It seems that there is also an age and gender difference in traveling green. Boomers are more likely to go green while traveling than Generation Y’ers. And women business travelers are more likely than men to turn off lights and adjusting the heat/air conditioner when leaving the room, and using public transportation.
