And the Winner of the Least Eco Friendly City is…
A recent poll done by Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo looking at the environmental habits of the residents of eight of the world’s richest cities found that Tokyo is the least eco friendly city.
Seems that four out of ten Tokyo residents had no intention of sacrificing their convenient lifestyle in order to help prevent global warming. They bought the least number of eco friendly products and were far behind other cities in using clean energy, biomass, solar, or wind energy.
Of the other cities polled - New York, Paris, London, Milan, Moscow, Toronto, and Frankfurt - it turns out that the Parisians and Milanese were the happiest with the idea of changing their lifestyles to save the planet.

I’m not surprised to see my adopted home town at the top of this list but it does disappoint me.
Eco friendly products are actually starting to take off here but it feels more like it’s the trendy thing to do rather than something that is coming from a realization that it must be done.

Hi Shane, interesting that you’re not surprised by the results. Guess that means it’s pretty obvious on the streets that Tokyo is not green. Out of curiosity, what sort of eco-friendly products are being sold there?

Liz, there are a lot of products touted as eco-friendly but as someone who doesn’t speak or read the language well it’s hard for me to determine if this is just a marketing ploy by some companies or a signal that real efforts are being made.
There is a lot of buzz about eco-friendly AC units and toilets and I am seeing a lot of eco labeling in the cleaning supply aisle of my local store.

One green innovation in Japan is the water-saving toilet which has a faucet and basin for handwashing on top of the toilet, and the waste water drains into the tank!
