Green Christmas gift: Carbon neutrality

Did you know that flying and travel comprise 51 percent of the average American’s carbon footprint?  Statistics from AAA show 65.2 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home during the Christmas-to-New Year holiday period last year.

If you’re a green traveler who wants to give an eco-friendly gift this holiday, you could go with carbon-free living for a day online.  Right now, the ONE DAY campaign is aiming to reduce and offset U.S. CO2 usage during the holidays when emissions skyrocket. If you visit the ONE DAY website, you can request one day of carbon-free living and be able to pay the gift forward by emailing personalized links to your friends.  Recipients can then pass it on to others increasing the impact.

Vermont-based Brighter Planet came up with the idea for ONE DAY.  For each ONE DAY participant, Brighter Planet will donate 136 pounds of carbon offsets which is the CO2 emissions for an average person in a single day.  The offsets will support renewable energy projects in various U.S. communities.

“This year, people are looking for low-cost, environmentally conscious ways to spread holiday cheer,” says Patti Prairie, CEO of Brighter Planet. “Although one day of carbon-free living is not your typical stocking stuffer, it costs consumers nothing, is a snap to send, and says we can give the gift of our planet to future generations.”
